Staying Safe in the Winter Moving Season

Winter is just around the corner! There’s a lot to look forward to in the colder months: the holidays, seeing family, ice skating, snowball fights, and more. While there’s a lot of fun to be had in the winter, there are also many more safety and logistical considerations – especially for moving companies.

With that in mind, here are our top tips to keep your business running smoothly during the winter season.

Plan Ahead

Weather can be unpredictable this time of year. Make sure to check the weather forecast a day or two in advance of a move so you have time to make the proper arrangements.

If you operate in an area where ice may be an issue, consider asking your customers to salt the walkways being used a few days in advance. This will make the move go quicker and keep crew members safe.

During the winter, many towns and cities employ snowplows to clear the streets. Make sure to get a permit for street parking so you won’t be ticketed or towed during the move.

It’s starting to get dark much earlier in the day. On the winter solstice (which is coming up on December 21st), there will only be 7 hours and 49 minutes of sunlight. Plan your moves accordingly! You don’t want to be moving heavy items in the dark.

Arrive Prepared

Even if your customers are willing to salt their driveways, you should also consider bringing your own tools to prepare the pathways. That means shovels, de-icers, and even a snowblower if your area gets a lot of snowfall.

Your customers won’t be happy if you track water into their homes or damage their possessions. Bring tarp or other protective materials to keep both the home and the objects being moved safe from the elements.

Being prepared also means wearing the appropriate attire. Your crew may need coats, gloves, and other winter gear to protect them during the move. Consider investing in some cold-weather clothing for you and your employees – customize them with your brand to get some free marketing out of it.

Be Flexible

There’s nothing you can do about bad weather. What you can do is be flexible about rescheduling moves, and arrange a poor weather strategy with your customers beforehand. Your customers will appreciate your adaptability.
