Unpacking the Numbers: A Look at Average Move Size and Other Trends By Region in 2022

Local moving companies have seen significant growth in 2022 due to the surge in demand for relocation services. As more Americans choose to relocate, many are opting for local moving companies over national ones. This is because local movers often have a better understanding of the specific needs of their communities, and they tend to offer more personalized services.

The growth of local moving companies has been particularly significant in smaller cities and towns, where residents are looking for trustworthy and reliable service providers. Additionally, local moving companies tend to have lower overhead costs, making their services more affordable than larger national chains.

As a result, local moving companies have been able to capture a larger share of the market in 2022 and are expected to continue growing in the future.

At Oncue, we wanted to know which regions were experiencing the highest levels of growth and how moving companies were faring. We took a look at the more than 55,000 moves booked with Oncue in 2022, and the results might surprise you!

The total moves booked on the Oncue platform were up 57% in 2022, with the largest increase coming from the Western states. It saw a whopping 91.7% year-over-year increase. The Midwest region followed closely with a 56% year-over-year increase, while the South and Northeast regions had similar growth rates at 44.5% and 43.6% respectively.

Here are some other trends we noticed:

  • The average move size in terms of dollars and found that the Northeast region had the highest average per dollar move for the second year in a row. An average move size for this region was $1166, up 5.8% year-over-year from $1102 in 2021.
  • The West hit the $1100+ average move size threshold for the first time in 2021, reaching $1106 in 2022, an increase of 5.6%.

It’s interesting to note that, even with more people moving to warmer climates, local moving companies in the Northeast still have the higher average dollar moves across any region in 2022. This region experienced a 13% increase compared to the overall 2022 average of $1032.
